It seems that AI (Artificial Intelligence) is a hot topic / commodity for 2024. Applications of AI are common news items with companies like Microsoft touting how it is going to be or has been integrated to apps.
Interesting to me as a photographer that Adobe is on the case with AI baked into their applications, especially PhotoShop and Lightroom.
I shoot a lot of pictures of the grandkids and their teams in poorly lit arenas, through less than clear plexiglass and often at a distance – e.g., the far end of a 190 foot ice surface. This means I end up shooting with a high ISO, usually 3,200 to freeze actioon of the fast action on the ice.
While modern cameras are really good at capturing images in low light situations, high ISO does create “noise”, formerly called grain in the film world. So a shot at f2.8, s 1,600 ISO 3,200 is typically noisy.
Enter Adode with their AI enhancement tool that analyzes the picture to reimage with reduced noise.
Here are two shots – the original without noise reduction and the cropped and processed shot with AI enhancement.

Here is a second example

While it may be difficult to see in these web images, the results are truly amazing.
The only drawback is that it is a slow process. It took about half an hour per image. Clearly it is intended for limited use in special circumstances.
